The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra may introduce CoE technology for a thinner and brighter screen

Samsung Electronics plans to introduce polarization-free technology (CoE) in its flagship Galaxy S26 Ultra in spring 2026, which will be the first time CoE technology has been applied to Samsung's upright phone.

CoE technology replaces the polarizer of an OLED screen with a color filter and uses a black pixel Definition layer (PDL) for sharper colors, reduced power consumption, increased service life and improved light transmission, while making the screen thinner and easier to fold.

With the increasing demand for high-end games and the trend of thin and light mobile phones, reducing screen power consumption has become the focus of the industry. If Samsung succeeds in applying CoE technology to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, more upright phones are expected to follow.

Samsung first adopted CoE technology in the Galaxy Z FoldD3, a foldable phone launched in 2021, and will continue to use this technology in the Galaxy Z Fold6 in 2024.

At present, Samsung Display (SDC) is the Samsung CoE screen supplier, and also supplies CoE folding machine screens for Xiaomi, vivo, Google and other manufacturers. Chinese panel manufacturers such as BOE and TCL Huaxing also supply CoE folding machine screens to Chinese mobile phone manufacturers.

In addition, the black PDL for SDC folding OLED is supplied by South Korea's DS Neolux, and boe and TCL Huxing use black PDL provided by Japan's Toray and Mitsubishi companies. Lg Display (LGD) is also developing CoE technology, but has not yet identified customers for folding products using CoE technology.
