SSD prices are expected to decline in the fourth quarter of 2024, benefiting consumers

According to the latest research report from TrendForce, the price of client solid state drives (SSDS) could fall by 5% to 10% in the fourth quarter of 2024. This trend is due to the double impact of increased production and weaker demand, which will benefit consumers from more competitive prices.

In addition, other NAND flash products, such as eMMC/UFS and 3D NAND wafers, are also expected to see price adjustments before the New Year. However, buyers of enterprise-class SSDS may face a small price increase.

In the third quarter of 2024, the client SSD market has seen a small price reduction, and TrendForce expects this trend to intensify in the following period, with more intense price competition. The opportunity for consumers to purchase a larger capacity SSD with the same budget is certainly exciting news.

One of the main reasons for the price reduction is the current production capacity of NAND flash manufacturers, with more high-capacity chips. While some economists have reservations about possible production cuts by companies, shifting resources to other areas seems a reasonable choice given the good market outlook.

In addition, weak demand is also driving down NAND prices, especially in the context of the artificial intelligence PC (AI PC) market performance has not met expectations, and the market is still expecting the launch of breakthrough AI applications.

For the eMMC/UFS segment in mobile devices, the largest decline is likely to occur in the fourth quarter, with an expected price reduction of 13%. This is mainly because equipment manufacturers are running down inventory and remain cautious about price increases.
