On August 7, Intel announced that the first products based on the Intel 18A process node - AI PC client processor Panther Lake and server processor Clearwater Forest - have been shipped, powered on and successfully started the operating system, less than two quarters away from the stream.
According to Intel, both Panther Lake and Clearwater Forest are progressing well and are expected to begin mass production in 2025. In addition, Intel also announced that the first external customer with Intel 18A is expected to complete the streaming film in the first half of next year.
Kevin O 'Buckley, senior vice president and general manager of foundry services at Intel, said several cutting-edge system-level foundry technologies are being advanced to provide Intel product groups and foundry customers with full-stack innovations that are critical to the next generation of products. We are working closely with customers to bring the Intel 18A to market by 2025.
Last month, Intel released version 1.0 of the Intel 18A PDK (Process Design Kit), which enables foundry customers to leverage RibbonFET's all-surround gate transistor architecture and PowerVia backside power in Intel 18A based chip designs. These two core technologies contribute to the further miniaturization of processors and their continued improvement in energy efficiency, which is exactly what is needed to drive the development of AI computing.
Intel's EDA and IP partners, including vendors such as Cadence and Synopsys, gained access to the 1.0 version of Intel 18A PDK in July and are updating their tools and design processes so that external contract customers can start designing chips based on Intel 18A.
